How should I send you my Files?

I’m pretty flexible with how I receive files. Usually Dropbox or Google Drive is the easiest, but if there is another method that’s easier for you, I’m happy to accommodate. For preparing tracks, I only need you to do 3 things:

  • Name each file with a name that helps me identify what it is (snare, synth lead, acoustic gtr, etc.).

  • I prefer to have “dry” tracks (no compression/reverb/effects), but if there are any effects that you are using and would like to keep, you can give me both a wet and dry version of those tracks.

  • Consolidate/zero every track. This is the most important one. Consolidating means that every track needs to be one audio file that starts at the beginning of the song, so if you have a guitar that doesn’t come in until the 2nd verse, the audio file should start at the beginning of the song and have silence until the guitar comes in, rather than starting in the 2nd verse (see example 2 below). If tracks are not properly consolidated, it becomes a large puzzle to try and reassemble your song before I can start to mix, so I will ask for a new set of consolidated stems if this is not done.

    You won’t have to worry about this until we’re already in contact, so there will be time for me to clear things up if you have questions about preparing/sending files.

Examples of correctly and incorrectly consolidated audio files

  • Yes and no. I am not a mastering engineer, and as such I am not able to truly master your song.

    However, when I send you the final mix, I will include a “Heated” version (free of charge), which can serve as the master if you do not plan on hiring a mastering engineer. This file is essentially just a louder version of the mix, set at a level that will play nicely with digital distribution (Spotify, Apple Music, etc.)

    You can absolutely use the “Heated” file as your final master, but I want to be very upfront with the fact that I am not truly mastering your song, as mastering is a separate art from mixing and I don’t want to take anything away from the engineers that can do it well.

  • We can work out the payment details once we’re in contact, but I do require at least partial payment before I start mixing in order to prevent scams.
